I truly enjoyed everything about this novel. Blood Song started out as a coming of age story for Vaelin Al Sorna, son of the infamous Battle Lord to the King. He's abandoned by his father and grows up as a member of the Sixth Order, a sect who trains boys to be warriors. Ryan did a solid job in his world building, especially when it came to the religions, cultures, and belief systems of the different lands. The magic system wasn't fully touched upon in this novel, but I feel as if that part of the plot will be slowly developed over time.
Each character created by Ryan was special to me and I thoroughly enjoyed Vaelin's character and found myself unable to put the book down for fear that I might miss something that happened to him. He's fearless, morally just, and questions his idiosyncrasies as a sign of something more. Ryan constantly hints that Vaelin is destined for greatness, or atleast have some sort of impact on the world. I'm excited to see what is in store for this character and this series.
